	Link to Site: NJ Training Explorer

Project Stakeholders: New Jersey Department of Labor, Office of Research and Information
In 2020 at the New Jersey Office of Innovation, I worked with the New Jersey Department of Labor (NJDOL) to help job-seekers find training in New Jersey’s fastest growing industries. The range of training provided through accredited schools and programs could help people get into jobs such as nurse practitioners, supply chain logistics, social work, and advanced manufacturing. The exciting design focus was to help people leverage NJDOL’s rich workforce data to find more relevant and impactful training opportunities for new career opportunities.

	Product Development Process

I paired with a cross-functional team at VMWare / Pivotal Labs that consisted of a product manager, product designer, and software engineer. The team at Pivotal Labs was working full-time on the project for three months until I assumed both Product Manager and Product Design roles.
For the design system, we looked at similar training search tools that other States had and College Scorecard, a U.S Department of Education tool. At the time, these tools were either built on privately managed platforms or javascript visual frameworks like Vue. The team chose to build mobile-first design components on a React framework for project sustainability.
We started with discovery sprints to understand the mindsets and entry points that people had when seeking training in New Jersey. We also spoke to career coaches and case managers at NJDOL’s workforce development centers called Career OneStops. This helped the team understand how job coaches used career search tools and what data they used to help training seekers. Through card sorting and prioritization exercises, these conversations with training seekers and coaches helped the team drill down to which training filters would be the most relevant and useful in an online catalog search.

	Translating Data into Action

These discovery conversations helped expand the product direction beyond a catalog of training information. Using historic NJDOL data on training, we helped people make more informed career choices by showing employment rates and salary information post-training. People who were early in their career search also expressed interest in using this training catalog as a research tool for other jobs.

	The team integrated NJDOL’s in-demand jobs list and open data APIs to help people understand career growth, as well as what a day-in-the-life looks like. To one research participant’s surprise, they were no longer interested in phlebotomy when they saw on the website it was about drawing blood from people.Continued Development, Support, and Workshops

After building the initial foundation for the Training Explorer with Pivotal Labs, I worked with software engineers at the Office of Innovation to continue making iterative developments on a training comparison tool and special training provider offerings like night classes, childcare, and accessible entry.
Stakeholders at NJDOL were inspired by the team’s human-centered design approach. We coordinated workshops with their staff, including leadership, to teach them how to conduct and apply human-centered practices to their work.

The Impact

Today, the tool is part of a larger, continued effort from NJDOL called My Career NJ to provide additional workforce tools to help people find training and explore new careers. As of 2024, the tool has helped over 100,000 people find training programs and job openings.

	Link to Site: New Jersey Disability Information Hub

Project Stakeholders: New Jersey Department of Human Services, New Jersey Office of Information Technology, and The Office of the Governor

In 2024 at the Office of Innovation, I worked with the New Jersey Department of Human Services (DHS), the New Jersey Office of Information Technology, and the Governor’s Office to develop an online information hub for people with disabilities. Before this website, people with disabilities and their caregivers had to navigate potentially a dozen separate division and agency websites to find information about programs and services. DHS publishes a resources guide that is beloved by the community, but is only updated and printed on an annual basis. For individuals who are visually impaired or whose first language is American Sign Language, this 270 page print guide is inaccessible.
&#60;img width="1727" height="1258" width_o="1727" height_o="1258" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/df1fcd4414cb0b4016c1fe5f98b02e6e7798584b9bb8abadb63dfac3bd1c8284/Screenshot-2024-11-17-at-2.34.28PM.png" data-mid="221922658" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/df1fcd4414cb0b4016c1fe5f98b02e6e7798584b9bb8abadb63dfac3bd1c8284/Screenshot-2024-11-17-at-2.34.28PM.png" /&#62;
Tabling at the Abilities Expo with Division of Disability Services

The Research Process

To inform the structure and accessibility needs for the website, we conducted extensive user interviews with people with disabilities and caregivers throughout New Jersey. At the Office of Innovation, I paired with a service designer to recruit, facilitate, and synthesize actionable next steps from these interviews. From March through April, we conducted one-on-one interviews with over two dozen individuals with a disability, caregivers who support people with disabilities, and community-based organizations in the space.
Research Accommodations and Trauma-Informed Approach

To conduct research with people who have disabilities, we consulted with people who directly serve this community. The Division for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing provided ASL translations during calls. They also recommended we used Zoom because the software had better support for real-time closed captioning. For people who are deafblind, we worked with their personal interpreter for the conversation. Almost all individuals preferred to have a virtual because it was easier to access than getting to a physical location. Some individuals preferred an in-person option and we were available at the Abilities Expo in Edison, NJ.
 We made trauma-informed choices about who to speak with for this study. We chose not to speak with individuals who were recently diagnosed within a year of the study. We also followed the lead of individuals in how they chose to self-identify and describe their disability.

In-person conversation guide used at the Abilities Expo

	Conversation Guide Overview

The hour long conversation guide was split into three major sections.
The first section gave the team a chance to introduce ourselves and learn more about the individual and their goals and aspirations.

The next section focused on a beta version of the disability hub homepage to get initial reactions. We followed the individual’s lead on what they might be interested in learning more about, as well as understanding what content they thought was missing. For individuals with screen readers, we were interested in understanding if the site’s navigation was easy to get around or if there would be any issues with dropdowns.

The last section of the conversation led us to where individuals wanted to navigate to regarding their interest areas.

Feedback Widget

In terms of accessibility findings, we were able to make heading structures more consistent as a result of this testing. This helped individuals with screen readers quickly access information. We also developed a “Get Help Now” section that highlighted key services, contact information, and call lines for more immediate support. Lastly, we added a feedback widget at the bottom of each page so that people can leave feedback if there was any content that was missing.

	The Impact

DHS had launched the site (video link) on July 27th, which is ADA Day. At the launch event, individuals from the disability community spoke about their experiences finding resources and how the disability information hub helps the community.

To continue the effort to make a living and breathing online resource, we worked with DHS to hire and onboard a content manager for the disability information hub. Moving forward, the team will have the opportunity to work with this new hire to share our research practices with the disability community.

		<description>Civic Technology

	While major cities have the werewithal to invest in large-scale technological solutions, I wanted to empower smaller to mid-sized cities with the ability to leverage technology on a smaller, faster prototype basis with project-based work with data management provider Stae. The idea is that cities can test out solutions to problems more quickly without having to engage in the procurement process. In this process, city officials become more informed about how to apply IoT sensors, data management layers, and data-driven workflows.

	During snow events, the Resident Response Center in Jersey City was flooded with calls from people, asking where the snow plows were at.
 I helped conduct field interviews with the Team to understand their pain points and needs when snow events happened. Based on the interviews with RRC team members and management, I built a GPS tracking device for Snow Plows in Jersey City to inform the team of real-time locations of snow plows and where they’ve been. The RRC also wanted to route questions off the phone to a chatbot service, which I helped build out an integration for. Citizens will be able to query the snow plows in their area to find out basic information such as routes, as well as other city services like courts, and when they can expect their streets to be plowed.

Build materials required for a real-time GPS sensor (coffee optional)

	Real-time IoT Sensors: Weather, Parking, and Location data - Evanston, ILI worked with Evanston's Digital Services team to prototype
several IoT sensors including weather and parking sensors. Weather sensor data was used for communication purposes to help the City show beach conditions during the Summer. I also connected an existing weather sensor service they had to a standardized API via Stae, where they could include other city data such as traffic and 311 complaints.

For parking sensors, I used a magnetometer to detect large changes in nearby magnetic fields. When a car parked over the sensor, a change in the sensor's x, y, and z fields were detected and it would send an update to a cloud server that the parking space was occupied. I also used a Hex Display to show a read out of available parking spaces.
One of the deliverables of this work was an educational video explaining on how parking sensors work. In the video, I’m using ultrasonic rangefinder sensors but explain the pros and cons of other approaches.
I created this video along with my colleague Adriana at Stae as part of a "How Smart Tech Works" video series.

	Telling the Human Impact of San Francisco's Parklets &#38;amp; Public Life Studies

	The San Francisco Planning Department wanted to understand the human impacts of their parklet program -- a multi-agency program that flipped parking spaces into 10'x10' public spaces, sponsored by adjacent businesses or organizations. A Parklet is an urban design approach to reclaiming public space from cars by turning parking spaces into public spaces. The SF Planning Department wanted to understand the many ripple effects on neighborhoods and impacts at the block level.
In collaboration with Stae &#38;amp; Openbox, a design research firm, I worked with the City's Planning Department to conduct field interviews with people on the street using intercept surveys and research tools. These interviews helped inform the Planning team on the impacts of their parklet program, neighborhood perception, and how they could operate as additional spaces for people on the block.

&#60;img width="2000" height="1907" width_o="2000" height_o="1907" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/de1f848568b0cdd367cc3d9abb3ded425f90ba5aa15fd8091bddf555d941fb92/sf-survey.jpg" data-mid="62964479" border="0" data-scale="100" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/de1f848568b0cdd367cc3d9abb3ded425f90ba5aa15fd8091bddf555d941fb92/sf-survey.jpg" /&#62;
Intercept Survey at Luna Reinne Parklet, San Francisco

The Planning team also wanted to understand how the city changed as the program matured by incorporating demographic data, survey data, and internal data on their parklet program. Blending quantitative and qualitative sources, the team designed a website that allowed people to explore the data and interviews in an interactive exhibit. I was responsible for creating data visualizations that incorporated contextual City data as well as the stories we learned more about people involved in the Parklet program.

	Guilford County StorytellingUnderstanding the impact of varying jurisdictions can be a confusing process but when Jason Jones, Analytics &#38;amp; Innovation Manager for Guilford County, asked the Stae team to help make his work more transparent, we obliged him with a stop-motion video. Before we got to the video, he underscored the work that the County does with other agencies like animal services and non-profit organizations. We used these case studies to inform the content of the video to illustrate how the County incorporates data in its daily work.

API / Smart City Explainer VideosOne guiding principle in any of my work is that I should be able to explain it to my younger brothers, grandmother, and Mom. I worked with Adriana Young to develop a video series to explain some more of the tehcnical aspects of civic technology. To do this, we used children's toys to explain how IoT, APIs, and cloud data management works. Adriana did the voice over and script and I designed the sounds and edited it all together. This material would serve as the basis for the marketing content for Stae as we developed content to describe how the product worked.

Workshop: BetaNYC Mobility For All

	I organized a workshop on imagining alternative transportation futures at BetaNYC's Mobility for All Challenge, as part of National Civic Day of Hacking. I designed a session to hold a safe space for dialogue to happen around ways that we keep ourselves and authentic as we make our through the city to our jobs, friends, and lovers. &#60;img width="5472" height="3648" width_o="5472" height_o="3648" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/4c9f772b879c3fdecbdd339c9b858212bd3d45eb0065d55a2ba76667337cebec/Mobility-For-All-Hackathon-speech.jpg" data-mid="62962450" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/4c9f772b879c3fdecbdd339c9b858212bd3d45eb0065d55a2ba76667337cebec/Mobility-For-All-Hackathon-speech.jpg" /&#62;

From a personal perspective, as someone who is transgender, there is a constant spectre that follows me where I've being targeted for who I am. I can't allow fear to grip my life but I also need to keep myself safe. I shared with the group what safety and authenticity means to me and in this process they recprocated what it means for them. I shared healing arts techniques and ways to reduce stress through Breathwork and mindfulness practices. We offered this to other groups participating as well. To share what we've discussed, I asked each person to make a collage from magazines and newspapers, as well as write a letter to a future version of themselves on how they might navigate the city authentically. Five years from the event, I'll send these letters back to them.

Speaking with Viranel Clerard about Detroit’s Murals

I presented work on making Detroit's murals more accessible with artist Viranel Clerard at Gehl's Public Life event in Detroit. In early 2019, I got in touch with Viranel after reading about his work on Curbed. I was inspired by his ability to catalogue murals he's come across in Detroit and how he was able to do all of this work while juggling two jobs. I asked if he was interested in cataloguing the murals by creating a machine-readable database to map them and make connections to other sources of city data. He responded quickly saying he was very interested and I began the process to transfer his squarespace website into a google sheet that could be automatically updated as he updates his site. From there, I created an ETL job using&#38;nbsp;Stae&#38;nbsp;to create an API feed and map them across Detroit.

&#60;img width="875" height="739" width_o="875" height_o="739" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/124261ce14930f462017344736791553821dc1e1d3b6851bbef06f7768b5e3d3/viranel-public-life.jpeg" data-mid="62962862" border="0"  src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/875/i/124261ce14930f462017344736791553821dc1e1d3b6851bbef06f7768b5e3d3/viranel-public-life.jpeg" /&#62;
Roundtable discussion with Viranel about the social impact of Detroit’s Murals

One particular analysis is to look at the proximity of murals to new building demolitions using a buffer tool like turf.js. A map of Detroit's murals becomes an advocacy tool to protect murals at risk or a tool to understand where development in the city is occurring in relation to murals.

Hackathon Mentorship&#38;nbsp;
	As part of growing Stae's civic data API usage, I coordinated hackathons and mentored groups on how to incorporate the civic data API into their challenge. Part of my introduction to API usage involved a specific challenge developed with organizers where people would use civic data as part of their hack.

	Vulnerability and Growth

	Manifesto

My work as an artist brings embodied practices to explore my relationship to my body, identity, and self-actualization. Primarily, I use electronics as a platform to exist in the present; to listen to my surroundings, feel the ground beneath my feet, and share that listening space back with people. My Chamoru ancestry is the foundation through which I approach these spaces naturally. I want to create spaces through live performance, workshops, and community programs where people can be immersed into their bodies, inviting whatever feelings may emerge in them. The outputs are a continuum of this process to invite people to be present with your self and explore personal vulnerability.

2109 Chamorro Spacetime is a recording from the future where Guåhan (presently referred to as Guam) is an independent, self-deterministic nation. In 2109, the Chamorros went deeper in their roots as master ocean navigators and conducted deep sea expeditions in the Mariana Trench. In this&#38;nbsp;extreme environment, they made contact with organisms that take shelter in&#38;nbsp;hydrothermal&#38;nbsp;vents. Through&#38;nbsp;this meaningful contact, the Chamorros are developing new ways to communicate not only with deep-sea organisms but also to other nations throughout time. Encoded within this recording and many other futuristic recordings is the consistent message: fight for one's independence and decolonization.

Issue Project Room: With Women’s Work, 2021

Vulnerability and Growth is an erotic short film that explores the textures and mutable forms of my body. The film documents a breathwork practice that I use to connect to my body and its sensations. The hope of these practices lead to a newer version of self that embraces both the beautiful and painful aspects.

The piece responds to the Media Sculptures: Maps of Space scores by pioneering video artist Mary Lucier included in Womens Work Volume #1, 1975.

Music for Theater &#38;amp; Dance, 2017

	In early 2017, Ka Baird asked me to collaborate on an ambitious project she had in mind for Issue Project Room that “incorporate(d) performance art, movement, some pageantry...” (Ka’s words). I embraced the complexity and performative elements of the piece; it was unlike much of the sound work I have done up to this point. Much of my contribution revolved around processing Ka’s piano work in the active space of 22 Boerum at Issue Project Room. To do this, I used a series of delay &#38;amp; reverb networks, narrow EQ’ing, a granular processor, and a vocoder for good measure. The result for Ka &#38;amp; I was a chattery dialog with her vibrant piano work and my real-time based work with electronics.&#38;nbsp;

	littleBits Education Trade Booth Design

	As part of a product launch strategy for the littleBits Code Kit, I designed a trade show booth to premiere the product and the brand as best in class at a technology trade show. I was responsible for the overall design of the booth for a 20’ x 20’ space including floor plan layout, traffic flow, feature inventions, graphics, and build logistics. Featured at ISTE 2017 in San Antonio, Texas, the Code Kit won Best in Show.

Workshop Prototype

	For Toy Fair 2017, I designed a POP (point-of-purchase) prototype for littleBits to showcase the new Droid Inventor Kit. Additionally, the prototype was used as pitch to create retail activations where kids could use the workshop to build their own Droid from the Star Wars universe. The concept was received well and was adopted by John Lewis, a high-end department store in the U.K.
